Day 37 – Hot Water on the Beach

After a brief overnight stop, today we are heading for Papamoa, which is a relatively short drive for us, only an hour and a half. As the weather is so good, on the way will visit 2 beaches.

The first beach is Hahei Beach, on the Coromandel coast and is lovely.

So good, we are all in for a swim
Clear blue water..

After a swim, it was tea and cake and a taste of Paua, a shell fish delicacy which is the fish from inside the very blue shiny shells they sell all over New Zealand. It was a bit like a cross between a fish and a mussel. Very good, would have again

Paua – may not look the best but tastes good!

Then we were off to Hot Water beach. As you may be able to guess from the name, hot water springs come from under the sand and the idea is, you dig a hole so that it fills with hot water and sit in it.

It’s very popular so finding a parking space for our 3 cars was the first challenge, but we did. Then Michael went off to rent a spade, you have to dig with something, and got the last one available.

Man on a mission, with a spade!

As I said, Hot Water beach is very popular. Can you guess where the hot springs are in the photo below?

I’ll give you another photo as a clue..
Yes, in just that little bit. Huge beach, small bit with hot springs.
So Michael digs for hot water… Zoe takes photos….
And poses for them – Love the lens Zoe, Love it..
Michael didn’t find any hot water there but we did find a vacant pool and jumped in… well actually stepped in very carefully because this is boiling water! You need to time it so that the sea is coming in to cool it down the hot springs – fine balancing act. Diane on digging duty???
Stu on real digging duty.
It’s like a hot tub but without the bubbles and temperature control..
Enjoy that hot pool
You can just about see the steam coming off the pools that were too hot to sit in.
While they were doing the hot pool thing and I was scalding my feet walking across the beach, I also got some nice crashing wave shots with Zoe…
And some nice pictures of Zoe taking pictures of crashing waves.
I also met a lifeguard from Liverpool, who spends his winters here on this beautiful beach and then goes back to spend his summers as a lifeguard on the Wirral. I know where I would rather be!

After a lovely day on beaches, we headed for Papamoa, seeing some wonderful views on the way..

As we near Papamoa, we get our first look at Mount Maunganui. We will be going up there tomorrow. Zoe tells me it’s only a 10 minute walk… Works for me!
