Day 12 – Full Steam Ahead

Having spend yesterday doing very little, we were back on the adventure trail today with a trip on the TSS Earnslaw, a 107 year old steamship across Lake Wakatipu, from Queenstown to Walter Peak high country farm. On arrival, the weather decided to be as unpredictable as yesterday…

Coming out of the rain, the TSS Earnslaw

Fortunately it soon cleared and we were heading in to sunshine.

Breezy up on the bow
This really is a steam powered ship

And we arrive..

This farm has a number of different animals. You have been warned….

Alpacas for Sarah
Marino Sheep – very expensive wool!
And highland cattle. There were other animals but I’ll spare you those.

We then had a very nice afternoon tea (with good cakes!) in a great location.

Before heading back we had a sheep shearing demonstration from Tomaz from Chile.

The record for shearing a sheep is 38 seconds. I think Tomaz was going for 38 minutes but he had a problem with the shearing equipment and stopped.

Back in the boat we have a bit of a choppy crossing, which was not the best for me and Lynn but we made it.

Once back on dry land, Lynn decided to treat herself (for surviving the boat trip) to a new hat…

But not this one!

On the way back we detoured to Arrowtown, which was 10 minutes from where we were staying. We arrived after 6pm so it was pretty much closed other than a few bars/restaurants. What a great little town!

So in conclusion, the TTS Earnslaw is a great trip (thanks Adrian for the suggestion) and worth the money. Queenstown is a very busy, cosmopolitan place and certainly the most commercialised we have visited so far. Arrowtown is lovely and we wish we had known about it before now. Very much worth a visit if you get the chance.

Tomorrow we have a very busy day as we are up early to do our rearranged Gondola/luge experience before we drive our longest journey on this trip to Franz Josef.
