Day 9 – Is that a Fjord I see before me?

No, It’s Milford Sound, which, according to our coach driver Rodrigo (from Argentina), and the captain of the ‘Maid of Milford’ (Bill, from Australia), it is actually a fjord not a sound but was incorrectly named at some point in the past. Do you know the difference??

Anyway, it was an early start to get the coach (we walked). “Leaving at 8.30am prompt. Be in the cafe by 8.15” said the instructions and we were. No coach, no driver to be seen. Coach arrives at 8.30am and driver says, “I’m having my breakfast, see you here at 8.50am”. Grrrr!

And we’re off. First stop on the journey, a place they filmed at bit of Lord of the Rings there’s a lot of them!). Nice view and Kea birds around which have a tendency to steal your food or anything else you leave around, apparently.

This Kea just sat posing for us and didn’t attempt to steal anything. Good bird.

Second stop, Mirror Lakes. Speaks for itself.

We then headed through the Homer Tunnel and down the winding road to Milford Sound for our hour and 45 minute trip. Warning – Lots of pictures of Milford coming up! But not that many really.

Our boat for the trip (with Julie in for foreground)
Higher than Niagara Falls according to Bill.
It was a bit nippy

Great trip, definitely worth doing, even if you’re not the best on water, like Lynn and me. As an aside, part of the trip included lunch on board, which was served in a brown paper bag, like you were on a school trip. I found it funny. However, it did include a very tasty chicken and mushroom pie (hot), crisps, muesli bar, oat biscuits and a pear.

Finished off the day with a visit to see ‘The Moles’ ‘ who were staying than a kilometre from where we were. Amazing who you bump in the on the other side of the world. Great to see them, well done to the boys for completing the 3 day Kepler hike and thanks for the tea Martine.

Good friend Adrian who has given us some great tips whilst travelling in New Zealand.

Next stop, Queenstown.

When we were on our cruise we went into Milford Sound in the afternoon and then just bobbed around during dinner, which was a bbq served on deck. Those waterfalls were amazing.

Our cruise ship visited there late afternoon, then bobbed around all evening whilst we had a bbq on deck, making the most of the views. Stunning backdrop
