Day 59 – Art for Art Sake..

We are up late, again! But get a shift on, have some quick breakfast and it’s down to the train station for another trip to the Quay. We are then jumping on the Big Red, hop on- hop off Bus, for a tour of Sydney.

Still impressed with the double decker trains.

It’s always good to jump on a ‘hop on, hop off’ bus when you are in a new city. You get to see a lot and, of course, the commentary gives you great information and history.

And we are off.

The downside of a hop on hop off bus is, you take loads of photos of buildings and interesting places and then, when you come to write about them, you can’t remember where they were or what they were about! Here’s some nice photos taken around Sydney…

The Fountain in the Kings Cross area, also the as the Red light district of Sydney.
The Sydney Tower Eye
Sydney Central Station – rebuilt on the old station site but also, when expanded, on a grave yard.
One Central Park –  A living tapestry of plants, flowers and vines which stretch over 50 metres high, it has become the world’s tallest vertical garden. Over 35,000 green wall plants were utilised within which 350 different species were selected for the green walls alone.
Central Park’s cantilevered heliostat is another defining feature of the building. Suspended from the 28th floor of One Central Park’s east tower, it serves as a way of reflecting light to the gardens and atrium below.
The newly opened, 6* Crown Hotel. Enough buildings for now..

We left the bus at The Rocks, as Julie’s friend Juliet said it was a must see. Good call Juliet as we found a place with really good tea and cake! The Rocks is a historic area in the shadow of Sydney Harbour Bridge. With the arrival of European settlers in 1788, it was here that the convicts first set up house and shop. It has a fascinating history.

A very dodgy street in the past.

We wandered down to the harbour and under the Harbour bridge where we met Michelle and family. Michelle’s daughter is studying at Warwick University! Michelle had also just had a crash course in taking photos with a phone from another chap and was very keen to try out her newly acquired skills for us…

Great work Michelle. You took some super photos. If you are reading this, give us a ‘Hello’ in the comments box below. Thanks again and lovely to meet your and the family. Say ‘Hi’ to nan who had the pad and pen 🙂 Old school wins!

We had a walk back around the Quay where we came across this excellent sculpture outside the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Now this is good but…..
How amazing is this! – Julie

Well, we were now in the mood for more culture. There’s an art exhibition at the town hall of the work of a very famous British artist. Let’s go!

Yes, the Art of Banksy is in town and we go.

We have both heard of Banksy and know of his most famous works – girl with balloon, etc. but we both found it interesting and, well, really good.

‘Game Changer’, appeared in a foyer at Southampton General Hospital during the first wave of the pandemic. It sold for £14.4m and Christie’s said it would donate “a significant portion” of its premium, meaning a total of “more than £16m” would go to Southampton Hospitals Charity.

We didn’t think we would spend the best part of 2 hours at a Banksy exhibition, but we did. I especially liked the exhibition of Dismaland, (a play on Disneyland) which was done at the disused Lido at Weston Super Mare in 2015. I wanted to go but for whatever reason, I didn’t get there. Wish I had now. Note to self – Just do it!

Final one for my Niece Supah Sarah, who is a big Blur fan…
