Day 58 – A night at the Opera

We have had an air B&B for the past 5 days so a hotel room is a bit of an adjustment but we can do it. It’s just a bit cramped. We are up, later than we thought for (there is a time difference, again) but on the move.

We find a nice little cafe in the arcade up the road and find….

The Sherriff picking up her coffee. You don’t get that in Brum!

We walk up the road and get adventurous. We take the tube train.

Julie in the tube station.

Two things that are really good about the Sydney train system – 1. You can pay on the barriers with your credit card (you can also pay on the trams and the busses too and it’s cheap) and 2….

Double decker trains! How great is that. And all the chairs have moveable backs so you can face which ever way you want to. Brilliant!

We arrive at Circular Quay and get our first look at..

Sydney Harbour bridge (with optional cruise liner).

Well there are only 2 things you want to see when you first arrive at Sydney Quay…

The bridge (with obligatory ‘Bathams’ West Bromwich Albion Shirt) and
The Sydney Opera House (Julie forgot to pack her Wolves shirt, shame).
Yes it was raining 😦 but we didn’t care 🙂
Inside the Opera House to pick our reserved tickets.
The Sydney Skyline is also impressive.

We had the afternoon around the town looking at impressive architecture..

And visited Hyde park…

Not the London one.
with impressive fountain, before heading back to the hotel to change for a night of culture..
at the Sydney Opera House.

Where we saw the Sydney Symphony Orchestra playing Debussy, Ravel (with guest pianist Vikingur Olafsson) and the main event, Beethoven’s Symphony No3.

One very impressive Opera House!
Acoustics are amazing.
And there appeared (from stage right) a piano.

Am amazing first day in Sydney that couldn’t be dampened by the weather. Lived up to all expectations. More tomorrow!
