Day 44 – Bathams’ on the Road again..

This blog thing is a bit hard to remember and keep on track when you miss a day or two, which is usually down to either, a) it’s been a really busy day and I’m knackered or, b) we have no internet. Like last night, the site didn’t have internet and just to make it more fun, my Australian Vodafone sim had no signal either. But the satnav in my motorhome knew exactly where we were. Back to day 44…

We wake early in our motorhome. Not surprising as we have a busy highway into Hobart behind us and everyone in the ‘trailer park’ seems to be up at the crack of dawn and chatty. It’s 6.45 and I make tea. we sit in bed and drink it. We then discover that the shower room /loo in the motorhome is ridiculously small and impossible to do anything in except have a wee, and that’s only if you’re desperate or on a site with no facilities!

We need to vacate the site by 10am. We have breakfast (fruit!), and are ready by 8.45am. We check Google maps for the car parks in Hobart. The harbour one has a picture on it with motorhomes so that will do. God bless Google Maps and the folk that do the reviews!

We are in Hobart and parked.

Nice harbour…
Except, just photobombing the photo top left is, a cruise ship.

We have a nice few hours in Hobart exploring, oh and I pick up a SIM from a very unhelpful and sulky man in the Vodafone shop. The are much more helpful and friendly in Vodafone New Zealand. Second example of unhelpfulness I’ve has in Tazmania. When I picked up the RV, I asked the young chap who gave me the keys, where the best place was to park in Hobart. He just said ‘Don’t’. Not helpful.

Onward – after tea and (very good) cake of course. This is our longest drive, out to Strahan. About 4 and a half hours, with some very windy roads to boot.

We see some lovely scenery on the way to Strahan but we were very disturbed by the amount of road kill on, and on the side of, the roads. It’s everywhere. wallabies, wombats, Tazmanian devils and more. Usually killed at night, hence they have a speed limit of 65kph from dusk till dawn. Just to be clear, this picture does not contain road kill.

That’s a lot of pipework to the hydro power station… in the middle of nowhere!

What country are we in again? There are a lot of familiar names here!
A long decent on winding roads into the mining town of Queenstown and then another 40 minutes on to Strahan.
Queenstown in the distance.

We arrive at 6.25pm, and the woman on reception is desperate to lock up at 6.30pm. So desperate that she virtually throws an envelope at me and puts a map in my hand as says “take a photo of the WiFi code, I’m locking up”. I say, I haven’t got my phone to which she actually said ” good god, it’s Platypus65, can you remember that!”. So rude! This is not what I expected.

On the plus side, the site is better than the ‘trailer park’ and looks more geared for holiday makers. The showers are good. Even better, on the way back from the loo before bedtime, the people across from us said across the way in the brook, the platypus’s were out and in the stream. It was pitch black and we could hear the movement and we think we saw them in the stream but not quite 100% sure.

We are back in the move tomorrow.
