Day 32 – On top of the world

Good morning all (or evening depending on where you are in the world). Firstly, my apologies for the lack of updates over the last however many days. There are 2 reasons for this, a) its been pretty full on, and b) we were ‘off-grid’. Seriously in this day and age, what air B&B doesn’t have internet?? Anyway, I’m here.

So day 32 and we are up early, well that was the plan, as we have a long drive up to the top of the north island, to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse, and back. pretty much 3 hours each way. We are on the road at about 11am. Not quite the early start we wanted.

As usual, there are some lovely beaches on the way and we stop for a quick look and paddle in the sea.

Nice view – take a picture

And we push on. Hour and a half and we are in a cafe for the obligatory Tea and Cake – good cake! However, opposite the cafe has a children’s playground with a zipwire and having loved the zipwire experience prior to the wedding, some ‘big kids’ can’t resist it.

Tine to push on to Cape Reinga. Just before Cape Reinga, we get our first look at (a part of) 90 mile beach (which is actually 60 miles long).

On the way up we saw the pure while sand dunes of Rarawa beach so decided that was a must see on the way back.

The sand is so fine it’s like power
There were also live clams on the sea shore…..
… and a stingray in the shallows.

And then we were off (roading again!) to 90 mile beach. After a little sight-seeing (thanks Michael) we made it to the beach..

More off roading – so glad my car has ‘gravel mode’!

great sunset
Arty shot – thanks for all the running Kate.

And we have a long journey home. But so worth it.

Of course we can’t go without a picture of someone looking fabulous…

Looking Fabulous Helen.
