Having arrived at Waipapa, and joined by Diane, Stuart and Kate, we also have the Neasey family staying less that half an hour away from us so it is a chance to catch up with them. So after a leisurely morning, with breakfast on the patio, we head for Paihia.

Nice lunch and a few drinks later…

Anyway, after lunch, an evening meal had been booked for us all in Russel, a quiet harbour on the other side of the bay where the Waitangi treaty was signed between the British and the Mauri people in 1840.

The last ferry was supposed to leave at 10.30pm. We arrived at 10.15pm to find the ferry terminus all locked up. Hmm… Website needs updating. But that’s OK, it’s only an extra 20 minutes drive, says Michael….

We won’t be doing that again. Tomorrow we head for the very top of the north island.
