Day 25 – The Glow from within

Day 25 and we say farewell to our base for the last 2 days in the Tongariro National Park.

But before we head north toward our next stop, we detour to the next cul-de-sac to have a quick look at the ‘historic station’. A place still used in the winter to ferry in the hoards of skiers.

3 train lines! pretty much New Street Station for New Zealand.

And we’re back on the road for our next stop (and adventure), the Waitomo Caves, home to Glow worms, which we quickly discover from our guide, are not actually worms but fly larvae! Who knew – we didn’t. Anyway, it’s one of many caves here that cover around 14k of caves. We chose the Ruakuri caves because it’s one of the few that allow you to take photographs. So be prepared for lots of cave photos. It’s also one of only 2 in the world that has disabled access.

To start with, this one has a spiral slope purposely dug out to get people down to the cave level.

Yes it spirals all the way to the bottom. The original entrance is now blocked off as it is a Mauri chief’s burial site.
A cave. The railings also have laser sensors that go off if you reach beyond, to stop you touching! Honest.
Yes, those tiny pin pricks of light are glow worms
And in the light they have silk like threads which are sticky and catch midges for food. They need to catch 4 to be able to go to the pupae stage and turn in to a fly. On average it takes 9 months to catch 4 midges. The fly has no mouth and will only live for 2 days with a sole purpose to mate. The female then lays 200 eggs, on average, on the ceiling to the cave. Biology lesson over – there will be a test at the end.
More glow worms
Enough cave pictures.

Cave visit over, we head for our overnight stay at the ‘Walnut Box’ on a working farm.

Where we are treated to a spectacular sunset.

Arty shot.
The view from our bedroom window!

Tomorrow we are back on the ferry bound for Waiheke Island ‘to meet up with the wedding party. Our whole reason for being in New Zealand. Let the celebrations begin.

‘Were you paying attention’ Glow Worm test: Question – How many glow worms did you see in the ‘more glow worms’ photo? No going back to check! Answers in the comments box below please. Prize all the way from New Zealand for the winner. *In the event of a tie, the winner will be selected at random from the correct answers.

* Small print – Judges decision final. Your house may be at risk if you go out leaving all your doors and windows open, except in New Zealand where it appears to be common place (and a nice place to live).
