Day 25 and we say farewell to our base for the last 2 days in the Tongariro National Park.

But before we head north toward our next stop, we detour to the next cul-de-sac to have a quick look at the ‘historic station’. A place still used in the winter to ferry in the hoards of skiers.

And we’re back on the road for our next stop (and adventure), the Waitomo Caves, home to Glow worms, which we quickly discover from our guide, are not actually worms but fly larvae! Who knew – we didn’t. Anyway, it’s one of many caves here that cover around 14k of caves. We chose the Ruakuri caves because it’s one of the few that allow you to take photographs. So be prepared for lots of cave photos. It’s also one of only 2 in the world that has disabled access.
To start with, this one has a spiral slope purposely dug out to get people down to the cave level.

Cave visit over, we head for our overnight stay at the ‘Walnut Box’ on a working farm.

Where we are treated to a spectacular sunset.

Tomorrow we are back on the ferry bound for Waiheke Island ‘to meet up with the wedding party. Our whole reason for being in New Zealand. Let the celebrations begin.
‘Were you paying attention’ Glow Worm test: Question – How many glow worms did you see in the ‘more glow worms’ photo? No going back to check! Answers in the comments box below please. Prize all the way from New Zealand for the winner. *In the event of a tie, the winner will be selected at random from the correct answers.
* Small print – Judges decision final. Your house may be at risk if you go out leaving all your doors and windows open, except in New Zealand where it appears to be common place (and a nice place to live).
