Day 23 – Back on the water

Today we travel to Tongariro National Park via Taupo and another amazing experience of seeing the Maori rock carvings on the side of lake Taupo. The carvings were actually done in the 70s by Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and a team of artists over 4 years – so not that old. We were booked on a sunset sailing. But before that, we had a few hours around Taupo

Whilst exploring, we came across the most extraordinary McDonald’s we have ever seen, so we had to try it out.

Yes, that’s a plane, a Douglas DC3 to be precise.
A real plane converted , sits about 20 – Quite bizarre. However, the tea and coffee was, well, just awful, so we found a proper coffee shop, with cake (of course!).
View from the coffee shop – well almost (I walked to the railings).

And before we knew it, we were on a catamaran, sails up and away.

Pizza provided on the boat… Great, do they have coffee??
Moari carvings
Great sunset and a really smooth sailing.
Julie enjoying a front seat on the way back to port.

Considering both Lynn and I are not good on boats, this was one of the best experiences, if not the best, we have done on this trip so far. Whilst anchored by the carvings, we had the opportunity to swim in the lake, but we left that to the kids, ha ha!

Tomorrow we are in the Tongariro National Park.
