Day 14 – Survivor! Rain Forest (and Fashion) Challenge

Today we head for what we thought would be a gentle trek through the rain forest to see the Fox Glacier. On the way, the sky was much clearer than when we arrived and we were able to see the Franz Josef mountain range.

This was a half day trek starting at 1pm so it was vitally important to fuel up before we went on the walk. So we headed for the nearest Cafe for tea and well, cake… Sort of.

A small bread and butter pudding with custard please. Yum!

Over the last 14 days Julie and Lynn have started to feel a bit under dressed on our New Zealand adventures…

and also, when it comes to posing for photographs, they really haven’t been meeting their full potential…

So they decided to ‘up their game’ for the trip to Fox glacier. Not that they can go back and change outfits for the walk, not enough time . However, they can certainly try and strike the pose! Challenge accepted.

So we meet Cliff, our tour guide for a gentle stroll through the rain forest. We had a lovely day, lots of exotic birds up in the trees that you can’t see to photograph. But, importantly, no midges!

Start easy with the posing girls
Our girls are really under dressed for this trip!

After an hour and a half we get our first look at the Fox Glacier

And a better view

After 2 hours, we stop on a dry river bed for hot chocolate at ‘Cliff’s Cafe’ and the girls up their game with the posing for photos

Cliff our guide with the flask, trying to ignore the posing.

Cliff decides we are the type of group who would be up for a challenge on the way back so we head along the dry river bed before crossing a number of streams and scrambling up muddy banks. A challenge some of our American group do indeed struggle with.

Tony finds the obligatory Gandalf staff.

It was a good one. Still not bringing it home Richard.
Getting better at posing.
Our group on their way back to the bus, battered but not beaten, despite Cliff’s attempts to break our spirit on the way back! Well done group.

Tomorrow we head up the coast to Westport. Can you believe it’s been 2 weeks since we left the UK!
