Day 6 – Are the stars out tonight

2.15am, it’s dark, very dark! indeed we are informed by our minibus driver Barbara, (who by the way is driving the last bit of our trip without headlights on and as she says, ‘the moon is very bright tonight’), all the residents of Tekapo have to use blackout curtains at night and all the street lights are at low level and point down to avoid light pollution. This all adds to an amazing experience stargazing with the Dark Skies Project. And in all the dark skies in all the world, Kate from Bristol, UK was our Dark Skies guide!

We have a last morning exploring the town of Tekapo before starting our long journey down the coast to Dunedin.

Lake Tekapo
Church of the good Shepherd
The garden sculpture Julie wanted to buy (don’t think our luggage allowance will be enough)
A Nissan Note, a very popular car hire choice for it’s enormous boot space!

On the way to Dunedin we have a pitstop at The Flying Pig. Great cakes!

Onward to Dunedin and more long, straight roads!

More tomorrow….
